Under EN 818-4, Grade 80 and Grade 100 chain slings can be used from -40C up to +200C without Working Load Limit reduction. Above 200C, mandatory derating applies based on actual temperature and exposure time. For foundry areas above 400C, standard chains are not suitable and specialized high-temperature alloy chains with certified derating curves should be specified.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.184 requires alloy steel chain slings to receive a thorough periodic inspection at least once every 12 months, with written records. Steel mills and foundries are severe service environments, so a 3-month inspection cycle is commonly recommended, combined with pre-use inspections before each lift and before storage.
Plate clamps rely on friction and clamping force rather than a positive mechanical connection. They can release without warning if the plate is outside the thickness or hardness range, if the clamp is not tightened correctly, if the clamp angle is wrong, if surface contamination is present, or if the plate weighs less than the clamp minimum working range.
ASME B30.20 requires below-the-hook lifting devices to have permanent, legible markings showing rated load capacity, manufacturer identification, and cautionary warnings. A written report confirming load rating by a qualified person must also be maintained. Devices without these markings and records should not be used in production lifting.
Yes, but only with careful derating and verification. Scale build-up, oil, pitting, air gaps, and poor surface contact reduce magnetic adhesion. Light scale may require derating, while heavy scale or oil contamination can require 30-50% derating or a mechanical lifting alternative. Do not use magnetic lifters on hot plates above the manufacturer temperature limit.

Serious injury incidents can cost more than $200,000, fatal incidents can exceed $4 million, and OSHA citation penalties can exceed $156,000 per violation. A proactive inspection and replacement program is both a safety requirement and a financial risk control measure.
