EN 1492 requires endless synthetic round slings to maintain a minimum breaking strength of 7 times the rated Working Load Limit. In offshore environments, dynamic loads, wave-induced acceleration, UV exposure, saltwater, and abrasion often justify a higher design margin for critical lifts. Always follow the manufacturer derating chart and never exceed the WLL shown on the sling identification tag.
Standard Grade 80 alloy steel chain slings are not recommended for prolonged saltwater exposure because corrosion, pitting, stress corrosion cracking, and hydrogen embrittlement can reduce ductility and cause sudden failure. For marine work, specify hot dipped galvanised Grade 80 chain or stainless steel Grade 316 for submerged or splash-zone use.
OSHA 29 CFR 1915.111 requires rigging gear to be inspected before use and kept in proper condition. Harsh marine environments often require more frequent documented inspections, including checks for corrosion pitting, cracking, deformation, and excessive wear. Offshore projects may also require NDT records and certificate traceability.
Hot dipped galvanising creates a thicker, metallurgically bonded zinc coating that performs far better in saltwater and harsh weather. Electro-zinc plating is thin and can wear off quickly, exposing steel to rapid rust and pitting. Marine terminals should specify HDG carbon steel or SS316 stainless steel shackles.
A dropped object is any item that falls during lifting operations, including the load itself after rigging failure. Offshore dropped objects can strike personnel or equipment with severe kinetic energy. Prevention depends on certified rigging, correct WLL selection, positive-locking hardware, secondary retention, and strict pre-use inspections.
Yes. Marine-grade lifting components are commonly required to include Mill Test Certificates that verify material chemistry, mechanical properties, and traceability. Offshore projects may also require NDT reports such as magnetic particle or ultrasonic testing. Keep these documents in the safety management system for audits and liability control.
